Following a vegan lifestyle is often associated with the products you eat, but what about other products you consume?

Take a look at how products, such as what you use in your hair care routine, can be vegan so you know what to look for when you look for vegan hair care products.

Traits of Vegan Hair Products

Hair products that are vegan also have some shared characteristics. Knowing what to look for when you search for vegan hair products can help you make sure they truly are vegan and good for you.

Free of Animal Ingredients

One common attribute of vegan hair care products is they are made in a way that does not exploit or use animals or animal parts. They do not include animal products or byproducts that might come up in typical haircare products.

Examples of animal ingredients that may befound in non-vegan products include:

  • Biotin: May be found in milk and yeast but also some plant sources, so its presence doesn’t necessarily mean the product is not vegan

  • Keratin: Can be found in hooves, animal hair, horns, scales, and other keratinized animal parts

  • Silk powder: Obtained from the secretion of the silkworm

  • Gelatin: Comes from animal bones, connective tissue, and skin

Free of Animal Testing

Also called cruelty free hair products, vegan hair products are not tested on animals, which can make you feel good knowing that the company who produces the products has not done so at the expense of an animal’s well-being. Our shampoo bars are certified vegan and cruelty free by PETA and part of the Beauty without Bunnies program.

Free of Mystery Chemicals

It pays off to look at ingredients, but sometimes they are not so easy to understand. Our shampoo bars contain no synthetic fragrances and instead use essential oils to leave hair smelling fresh.

Free of Parabens

Traditional liquid shampoos need more preservatives prevent mold or bacteria from growing in shampoo while it’s on the shelf. Because shampoo bars are not water-based formulas, there is no need for parabens to stay fresh and safe.

Plant-based Ingredients

Many vegan hair products are also loved for having plant-based and fewer ingredients. Sometimes ingredient lists use formal names and can be confusing. Look for words like seed and kernel on the ingredient list. Did you know Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil is the proper name for argan oil? Plus, the packaging is likely made in a sustainable way such as with recycled materials.
